The Final Hours of Google Stadia Are Here!

The time has come for us to say goodbye to Google’s have-it-your-way gaming platform, Stadia. After two years of life, its final hours have arrived. How did we get here? Let’s take a look back at what Stadia was and why it struggled to make an impact.

The Inception of Google Stadia

Google Stadia was first unveiled in 2019 as the first-ever game streaming service backed by a major tech company. It promised to revolutionize the world of gaming, allowing players to stream games directly across devices.

At launch, the service was quite promising, with access to over 50 Stadia-exclusive titles and the ability to scale up to 4K resolutions. Unfortunately, the service never saw that potential met in full.

Why Stadia Failed to Make an Impact

There are a few key reasons why Stadia was unable to fulfill its lofty promises.

• Lack of support: Google struggled to get third-party developers on board and was unable to secure the major titles that other services had. So, overall, the library of available titles on Stadia was quite limited.
• Exclusives: Despite having some exclusive titles, they were generally limited and not that popular. This meant that Stadia could not retain players, who started to drift away to other services.
• Price: The service was reasonably expensive, with a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 – more than the competitors. As well as this, there was an additional fee to buy the games, unlike other services which offered free copies on purchase.

The Final Hours Have Arrived

With all that in mind, the future was bleak for Google Stadia. As such, on the 30th of March 2021, the service will officially come to an end. So, that’s it – the final hours of Stadia have arrived. Don’t worry though, you still have time to take advantage of any remaining offers!

But it’s kind of sad to see it go – it was certainly quite the revolutionary idea. Who knows, maybe someday Google will try again. Until then, rest in peace, Stadia!
