Netflix targets broader rollout of paid password sharing ‘later in Q1’
Netflix Targets Broader Rollout of Paid Password Sharing – Hold On to Your Wallet!
Everyone’s favorite streaming service, Netflix, has announced that they plan to roll out a paid password sharing option “later in Q1” of 2021. We’re not sure what that can mean for those of us who like to take advantage of shared passwords with friends and family, but if history is an indicator it’s probably not going to be good for us!

What’s the Big Deal?
Netflix claims that the new option will be designed to open up the service to “a wider audience”. Critics have pinned it down to a simple fact: sharing passwords is stealing from them, and they want to get that money back. Some view this move as part of Netflix’s larger goal of going “all in” on the streaming market.
What Does It Mean for Us?
Well, first of all, it means that Netflix is serious about this. And, if it takes off, we can expect to see other streaming services follow suit in the near future. Which means that you’ll have to pay up if you want to keep using your current (and probably illegal) password sharing set up.
But What If I Don’t Wanna Pay?
We hear you. There are some ways you can get around the new system. Here are a few that we’ve come up with:
- Make New Friends – You know the saying, “birds of a feather flock together”? You’ll just have to find new friends who are willing to share their passwords!
- Get Creative – Create your own username and password combinations, then share them with your friends and family. Sure, it might not be as convenient, but at least you’ll be in control of your own streaming account.
- Use a VPN Service – You can use a VPN to mask your IP address and get around Netflix’s anti-password sharing system. Just make sure you do your research – some of these services can be a bit shady!
Bottom Line
It looks like Netflix is serious about getting more people to subscribe – and it looks like they’re serious about getting paid for it. If you’re not willing to pay, you’d better get creative, or find some new friends who are!
