Smartphone sales experienced their worst quarter since 2013: IDC

Smartphone Sales have Slowed but There’s Humour to be Found!

Recently, the International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that the global smartphone industry experienced its worst quarter since 2013, with an overall shipments decline of 6.6%.

The Causes of this Poor Performance

The results were especially disappointing when compared to the 10.4% growth of the prior quarter. There are a few reasons for this slowdown, but two main causes were cited:

  • Deterioration of machine-to-machine (M2M) and economic markets. This has caused weak demand from China and Europe.
  • An absence of consumable new features in flagship devices. Scant innovation in the designs and no major breakthroughs have caused people to think “What’s the point in upgrading?”

The Humorous Side!

Don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom! Despite the falling numbers, we can still find some humour in the situation.

  • Android vs Apple Fanatics. Something bound to cause a few laughs is the usual banter between Android and Apple fanatics. There’s bound to be a few people who defend their chosen phone’s superior features just to prove the other wrong!
  • Complaining about Battery Life. Another source of humour is people who complain about the battery life of their smartphones. After all, nobody likes when their phone runs out of juice in the middle of an important call!

Conclusion

Overall, it is a refreshing reminder that the smartphone industry has its ebbs and flows, with some quarters being better than others. Although this quarter wasn’t the best, at least we’ve still got the humour to keep us going.
