The current state of metaverse interoperability: Where design framework must go from here
Metaverse Interoperability: Let’s All Just Get Along
The idea of a “metaverse” has been discussed since the days of sci-fi classics like Ready Player One and Snow Crash. But, since then, the idea has been gaining traction and is even becoming a reality. The term “metaverse interoperability” describes the ability for people to interact, engage, and communicate across different virtual worlds.

The current state of metaverse interoperability is that it hasn’t been fully realized just yet. While there are some basic structures in place, such as a few standard protocols and some cross-platform development tools, it is still a work-in-progress. That said, it is still not robust enough to really be considered a fully-functional metaverse.
Designing the Future
So, where do we go from here? How do we make sure the future of metaverse interoperability is secure and can accommodate all types of applications? Here are a few ideas:
- Develop a Universal Protocol: It is important to develop a universal protocol, such as what is being proposed by the Metaverse Foundation, so that developers can more easily create applications across different virtual worlds.
- Encourage Cross-Platform Collaboration: Cross-platform collaboration is key for a successful metaverse, so it’s important to create communities and spaces that allow users to collaborate and work together on ideas and applications.
- DevelopTech Standards: Establishing tech standards, such as those proposed by the Web3D Consortium, is essential for the creation of a robust metaverse. Tech standards provide a foundation for interoperability by ensuring that all applications can communicate with one another.
Humour Aside
Sure, the idea of a fully-functional metaverse is exciting, but at the end of the day, it is no joke. The reality is that metaverse interoperability is still very much a work-in-progress, so we must continue to work towards a future where everyone can interact across different virtual worlds.
Let’s all just get along, shall we?
